Lao Telecom has become the first mobile network to have launched 5G service in the country. The launch event witnessed the presence of Minister of Post and Telecommunications Thansamay Kommasith, Lao Telecom Director General Souphon Chanthavixay, and other senior officials and staff of the company.

Last week, Lao Telecom held another 5G launch ceremony during the Lao Digital Week event. Lao Telecom revealed it is now offering 5G services in 28 locations across Vientiane, including tourist attractions, several shopping malls and universities, and Wattay International Airport.
What is Lao Telecom doing in Vientiane?
At their booth at Vientiane’s National Convention Center, Lao Telecom is also showcasing cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality (VR), drone-based space exploration, iFarm solutions, cyber security, cloud computing, and M-MoneyX. All these innovations seamlessly operated with the new high-speed internet service.
Which phones can use 5G?
The 5G service only works with a handful of smartphones, namely iPhones (from iPhone 12 up) and select Oppo models. iPhone users will need to upgrade to iOS version 17.2 to use 5G. Lao Telecom says that Samsung and other models will be able to use its 5G service “soon”.
Who attended Lao digital day?
The exhibition already saw attendance from several government officials, notably Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, who previously urged public and private stakeholders to enhance the country’s technological progress. The PM also recently declared 10 January as Lao Digital Day.
